The History of Mothers’ Day
For most of us, it’s one of our many British traditions; a day to show our love and appreciation for our Mums. Gifts are given, meals are shared and families get together. However, some would argue that it is a rather commercial affair and actually quite removed from its initial, religious origins.
In the UK, Mothers’ Day was traditionally known as Mothering Sunday. It took place on the fourth Sunday after Lent as is still the case. It had less to do with Mothers of a family and everything to do with the Church.
Centuries ago, people were encouraged to return to worship at the church of their original home – their “mother” church. Those who had moved away for work or marriage made the journey home on this day and were given time off from work to do so. Of course, people returning to their mother church would also have re-united with family, just as we do today on Mothers’ Day.
There were many children who were sent away to work as domestic servants or apprentices. On this Mothering Sunday, they too would have returned home. They would often pick wild flowers on their walk home to give to their mothers (or take to their church). This could have been the start of the modern day interpretation of Mothers’ Day as a day to honour your Mum.
Mothering Sunday was also referred to as Refreshment Sunday. This is because, due to the journeys some people had to take to return to their church, the fasting rules for Lent were relaxed on that day. A good excuse to share a special meal – much as we do now in the 21st century!
What does Mothers’ Day mean to you?
Whatever your beliefs, Mothers’ Day or Mothering Sunday is a day for people to come together. A day to eat together and celebrate family, whether that’s your personal family or your church family.
This year, 2019, Mothers’ Day is later than usual. If we’re lucky, the weather will be fine and people can celebrate outdoors so there are no limitations on space.
