Looking After Your Back
Looking after your back is important! Back Care Awareness week is promoted annually in October but we think it’s important to regularly raise awareness. An estimated 1 billion people worldwide, of all ages, suffer with back pain. It is the largest cause of disability and has adverse effects on physical and mental health, as well as industry and the economy. In the NHS, around 40% of sickness absence is due to back pain, costing more than £400 million per year.
We must all take steps to avoid back damage. At Gazebos Galore , we know that we supply a high quality, robust and heavy-duty product. Although our frames are kept as light as possible, the quality is reflected in the weight, especially with our Industrial models. Some of our customers do express concerns over their ability to transport their Gazebo. However, this needn’t be a problem. Don’t forget that Gazebos Galore Commercial Gazebos all come with a Wheeled Storage Bag for easy transportation. These wheeled bags can also be purchased for our Standard and Industrial models. We want to encourage looking after your back.
As well as this, there are simple suggestions we can all follow, to avoid straining our backs:
Think ahead
It’s all in the planning!
Get appropriate help from family, workmates or friends – share the load!
Decide where you are going to place the gazebo to avoid unnecessary lifting.
Unpack the gazebo from the box if possible to improve grip and manoeuvrability.
Use lifting aids where possible. get appropriate help from family, workmates or friends.
Take a rest, placing the frame on a table or ledge if applicable.
Keep Close!
Try to keep the gazebo as close to your waist as possible when lifting. This will reduce the pressure placed on your back.
Stay Strong!
Maintain a strong and stable position – feet apart with one foot slightly in front of the other. This may mean you have to regularly move you feet to keep your position stable.
Use your whole body – hug the gazebo frame close into your body.
Wear suitable clothing and footwear – high heels and flip flops are not sturdy enough options!
Squat!
Use your legs, keep knees soft, back as upright as possible.
Don’t bend at the waist!
Look ahead, not down.
Avoid leaning or twisting the back.
Smooth moves
Keep lifting movement steady and slow; jerking or snatching can increase the risk of injury.
Re-adjust your grip if necessary, by putting the load down and starting again. It’s not a race!
